Guide to Google Shopping Ads for E-commerce

d38-google-shopping-ad

Launched first as a paid channel in 2012, Google Shopping Ads have charmed both online shoppers and advertisers. Google offered its service of Shopping Ads to retailers which reliably delivered one of the highest returns on ad spend (ROAS) of any paid channels and has been reported for over 60% of their paid clicks.

Google Shopping Ads and Where to See Them

Product Listing Ads (PLA), also known as Shopping Ads, are the product ads that appear in results when you search in Google.

Digital 38 | Google Shopping Ads

You can also see these ads on the shopping tab, search partner websites, shopping service apps, YouTube, and Google Display Network.

What are Google Ads and Google Merchant Center?

Google Ads and Google Merchant Center are the two platforms used in shopping ad campaigns. With Google Ads, you can set up your ad campaigns, set budget, manage bids, increase insights, and optimise. While on Google Merchant Center, you can update your product feed with details about shipping and sales tax.

Setting up your product feed is similar to SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) because Google is using your feeds, site, and other search inquiries that trigger your ads.

Success with Google Shopping comes down to three things:

  1. Creating the top and most relevant ads through an optimised product feed
  2. Developing a campaign design that fits within your desired level of control while getting the best from Google
  3. Obtaining strong reporting data that you can make sound optimisation and growth decisions

It is important that you know your goals for you to set an effective strategy in promoting your products using Shopping Ads. Knowing your target ROAS and deciding whether you want to develop a customer relationship or generate sales are essential in building a lasting online business.

What is the difference between free and paid ad listings?

Many e-commerce entrepreneurs get to use the shopping listings for free when Google first made the announcement of making all products listed for free. But if you’re looking for the most leading position and an increase in volume with your shopping efforts, you need to do a paid approach.

Benefits of Paid Shopping Ads

All the results that appear on the main Google search results page are still 100% paid and are being prioritised. Paid placements give a comprehensive guide as to what potential buyers search for and will give listings the majority of clicks for any search products.

What are Free Product Listings on Google?

Free listings were introduced in April 2020 and have seen a 70% increase in clicks and a 130% increase in impressions across free listings and ads on the Shopping tab in the US. These free placements are seen on the shopping tab, Google Lens, Google Image results, and more.

However, the traffic from free listings alone is limited for most e-commerce sellers since the most prominent listings are still paid. The free listings always come below the sponsored listings.

While free product listings won’t totally convert your business, still, it will be a great way of knowing your potential for paid ads. You can check your performance for your free listings inside the Merchant Center under the “Reporting for surfaces” section.

PayPal Express Checkout for Shopify E-commerce Website

D38 | PayPal Express Checkout shopify-1.6

PayPal Express Checkout — Shopify Payment Method

PayPal is one of Shopify’s default payment methods. When you open a Shopify store, a PayPal Express Checkout account will be given using the email used to sign up. Sellers will be required to set up their PayPal accounts before they can collect payments for orders.

Reasons to use PayPal Express Checkout on Shopify

First is the optimised conversion. It allows faster checkouts and easy online payments as customers will see their order details.

Second is customer confidence. This Shopify payment method keeps the customer in your shop. Buyers can confidently and instantly pay and review their transaction details.

Third, there are no monthly fees, sellers can pay only when they get paid. There is no set-up fee when you open a PayPal business account.

Lastly, with PayPal Express Checkout, customers from all over the world can buy from your e-commerce store from any device whether it’s mobile, tablet, or desktop.

How PayPal Express Checkout Works

  1. A customer visits your Shopify website and adds items to the cart.
  2. Customer checks out and logs into their PayPal account.
  3. Customer settles their purchase instantly.
  4. That’s it – the order has been successfully paid!

What are the PayPal seller fees in Singapore?

Here are the flat-rate fees for selling to Singapore and international customers. For Singapore, transaction fee is 3.9% + $0.50 SGD and for international – 4.4% + fixed fee. The fixed fee is based on the currency of the payments. For example, for payments in USD, the fixed fee is $0.30 USD. An extra currency conversion fee may apply.

Your PayPal balance can also be withdrawn by simply linking it to your local Singapore bank account. Check out the withdrawal and return fees below for Singapore.

Shopify sellers must also remember that the e-commerce platform charges an extra percentage per transaction for third-party payment providers like PayPal. The fees will depend on the plan you’re subscribed to. Learn more about Shopify’s payment fees here.

PayPal Comparison: Standard or Express Checkout for Shopify?

D38 | PayPal Comparison: Standard or Express Checkout for Shopify? paypal-2Screenshot Photo: PayPal

PayPal is the safest way to send money, online payments, receive money, or set up your merchant account. There are two types of PayPal accounts — Standard and PayPal Express Checkout. Don’t get confused though. Shopify only integrates with PayPal Express. Regardless, we’ve prepared a PayPal comparison to differentiate the two.

What is PayPal Express Checkout?

Screenshot Photo: PayPal/App Store

PayPal Express Checkout is developed for online sellers. It provides convenience for shoppers whenever they buy goods or services because they won’t be needing input their shipping and billing information every time they checkout on Shopify or an e-commerce store.

With this, the shopper’s personal information and payment details will be stored securely in the online shop. It’s also an advantage for online businesses as this makes online shopping more seamless easier.

Comparison: PayPal Standard vs PayPal Express

PayPal Standard

D38 | PayPal Comparison: Standard or Express Checkout for Shopify? paypal-4
Screenshot Photo: PayPal/App Store

PayPal Standard transactions are processed on PayPal’s website and allow buyers to pay thru their PayPal balance or credit card. From your checkout page, it will be sent to PayPal and a standard transaction fee will be charged for these expenses, which is usually 2.9% + USD0.30 per transaction. After completing the PayPal Checkout, customers are redirected back to your site. Volume discounts are also given to buyers who processed over USD3000 in transactions with PayPal every month.

Checkouts are completed on PayPal’s website. With the standard type, online sellers rely on PayPal’s notification for payment success and failure using the Instant Payment Notification (IPN). The use of IPN can sometimes be defective, wherein orders are not being completed correctly on your store, making it a shortcoming of using PayPal Standard.

PayPal Express Checkout

Screenshot Photo: PayPal

PayPal Express is almost the same as PayPal Standard — a 2.9% + USD0.30 per transaction will also be charged with no setup or termination fees. The difference between PayPal Express and PayPal Standard is the checkout flow.

PayPal Express evades the IPN issues that are common with PayPal Standard. Shoppers will be directed to the payment gateway from your e-commerce or Shopify website, although the checkout is not completed on Paypal’s site. Shoppers confirm the purchase at PayPal, then get redirected back to your site with a token.

This token is only used by your site to make the final payment to PayPal itself. When a customer finishes placing an order it directs the token back to PayPal together with the final order details.

Paypal Express is a more reliable payment method than PayPal Standard. The checkout is completed on your e-commerce site, then the payment is processed on PayPal’s servers once the token is brought back to PayPal.

RCEP Benefits for Cross-Border E-commerce & Export

Digital 38 | RCEP Benefits for Cross-Border E-commerce & Export

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is a propositioned pact between the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its free trade agreement (FTA) partners. The agreement aims to cover trade in goods and services, intellectual property, and more. Knowing the RCEP benefits can help businesses in Southeast Asia provide better online shopping experience across borders for its consumers.

Additionally, RCEP is the world’s largest free trade agreement in terms of gross domestic product (GDP). It involves 15 member countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

What does RCEP mean for SMEs?

The RCEP pact will eliminate tariffs for at least 92% of goods, open up trade in goods and services, and promote investment to help emerging economies catch up with the rest of the world. For small and medium enterprises (SMEs), this means easier cross-border trading and selling between neighbouring Southeast Asian countries.

Why is RCEP significant?

Before the RCEP pact was established, there were multiple FTAs in different countries and each of them has its own set of rules. Exporters had to comply with different set of rules for different countries. It was not only time-consuming, but costly as well. By establishing a common set of rules, businesses only need to follow one set of rules when exporting their products or services.

With simplified customs procedure, improved trade facilitation, lowered transaction time and costs, it gives exporters like you a certainty on cross-border activities for your e-commerce plans.

This pact is especially beneficial to SMEs as the digital economy still presents you with significant barriers for cross-border trade.

How does the pact work for you as an exporter?

With greater ease and more open markets, the RCEP pact will provide exporters like you much needed certainty and stability in times like this. With the right strategy, you can leverage on the RCEP benefits for your growing online business.

Though it will take some time for RCEP to get ratified and come into force as certain parties need to complete domestic procedures, businesses may start preparing as early as now. You can look at your current business model and assess the long-term implications of the pact. By doing so, you can reap the RCEP benefits of a more convenient cross-border trade and selling in the future.

Planning to bring your exports into Singapore and start selling online? Contact us and we will help you get started with your cross-border e-commerce store.

Digital 38 | Shopify Ecommerce Quarter Growth

Shopify announced their financial results for the first quarter which ended last 31st March 2020. The Shopify eCommerce quarter growth mainly focused on their performance amid the COVID-19 pandemic, among others.

Working amid COVID-19

Although the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has proven a disadvantage for businesses, it also pushed e-commerce into the spotlight. Staying home has encouraged customers to purchase online, and business owners to start eCommerce platforms.

During this time, Shopify positioned itself to help businesses during this tough time. Providing several services such as an extended 90-day free trial, gift card capabilities for merchants, multiple online resources, and more.

Shopify Ecommerce Quarter Growth: Financial Performance

Merchant solutions revenue also grew by 57%, up to $282.4 million. On the other hand, subscriptions grew by 34% which resulted in an increase to $187.6 million.

In total, Shopify’s revenue for the first quarter was $470.0 million – thanks to a 47% increase from the previous quarter in 2019.

Shopify’s Business Highlights

In the first quarter of 2020, more merchants signed up for Shopify’s Fulfillment Network, exceeding the number of all previous quarters.

To help combat today’s challenges with COVID-19, Shopify is working with several warehouse partners. This initiative is mainly to ensure the best practices, safety, and health measures for warehouse employees.
